Comparison Of Oculus Quest 2 FOV With Other Headsets

FOV is vital for a wonderful VR experience. What is FOV? FOV is an acronym for Field Of View. It is the area/range of a sample that a camera can image based on the sensor and focal length (distance between the lens and the focused image). High FOV will make you feel very present/more involved and have an exceptional VR experience. FOV is created to make you more involved in the environment that you are viewing. It is usually measured in degrees. Higher FOV means wider and more real landscape.

Is FOV The Same For Every Quest 2 Headset User?

The FOV varies from one person to the other. The default FOV of Oculus Quest 2 is 93 degrees vertically and 89 degrees horizontally, that is (+-5.1) and (+-4) respectively. The headset is strapped around your head and hence the FOV might be higher or lower depending on your head size or shape.  Some people use glasses and hence their FOV will not be the same as the ones who do not wear glasses. The range of view is completely varying.

The Inter-Pupillary Distance (IPD) of individuals vary. People with high IPD have a lower field of view than people with lower IPD. There are 3 settings for IPD on Quest 2: 58mm, 63mm and 68mm. You can play with the adjustments to find the setting that suits you best.

How Do I Increase FOV On My Oculus Quest 2?

There is no definite software way of increasing or reducing the FOV of your Oculus Quest 2. Unlike IPD settings that can be adjusted, for example, from 1st to 2nd setting or to 3rd setting, the only way of adjusting your Oculus Quest 2 FOV is by finding a good position on your head and eye. Adjusting the IPD setting may help increase the FOV. Try putting the best IPD setting for your eyes and see whether the FOV will increase.

Secondly, try reducing the actual distance between the screen inside and your eyes. This will cause you some eye strain but may increase the FOV for you. To reduce eye strain, you might need to reduce game and VR time as well as having regular optical checkups. The foam padding that comes with your headset might be thicker hence increasing the distance between your eyes and the inside of the screen. Try placing another less thick object in that place. This will not only reduce the distance but also reduce light intrusion hence better images and VR experience.

Finally, get the best angle of the headset on your head to help you get the best FOV. Play along with the headset to find the best angle.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Do I Measure My IPD?

It is important to know your IPD especially if you are an active VR user. You can locally find your IPD by following these steps:

  1. Position yourself in front of a mirror.
  2. Hold a ruler above your eyes.
  3. Line the end of the ruler over one eye, center it on your pupil. All this time, the other eye should be closed.
  4. Don’t move the ruler. Keep it steady. Open the other eye and put your finger over the ruler in line with your pupil. Confirm the millimeter on the ruler. This is just an estimate of your IPD.

You can get an accurate measurement of your IPD by visiting an optometrist. This is a very crucial data as it will help you put the best setting for excellent visual setting on your Quest 2.

What Is Lens Spacing?

This is the distance between the clearest spots on the lenses on your headset. Lens spacing is related to IPD. Image clarity depends on the compatibility of your headset and IPD.

How Do I Adjust My Oculus Quest 2 IPD Setting?

Adjusting IPD will require you to begin with lens spacing. Adjusting the lens is by gently moving them together or apart. The lens spacing settings on quest 2 will require you to know your IDP for the best experience. Oculus Quest 2 has 3 settings for lens spacing.

These settings are:

  • 1st which is the narrowest (58mm).
  • 2nd, the middle in rank (63mm).
  • 3rd, widest (68mm).

The above settings should not restrict you. You can choose any depending on your IDP, position of headset on your head, and types of images in view. You can put a setting and try moving the lens together or apart and see what will work best for you.
