How To Fix A Faulty Oculus Quest 2 Controller

Oculus Quest accessories like the controller may get faulty and fail to work. If your controller is not functioning, then here are some ways to fix that problem:

1. Take Out The Batteries And Then Put Them Back In

If you have used TV remotes, then you must be familiar with this process. It acts as a soft reset for TV remotes. For your Oculus Quest 2 controller, it may work effectively. Try removing the batteries carefully, let them stay out for 1 minute. Put them back again and close as it was before you opened. This is a simple soft reset and could work.

2. Unmatch Then Rematch Controller With The Headset

This is a more complex procedure that would require you to download, install and launch the Oculus App. If you don’t have the app already, you can easily find it on iOS and android. Once the app is launched on your phone, the following steps will help you unmatch the controller:

  1. Go to Universal Menu to access Paired Devices.
  2. Click on Quest 2 Currently Paired.
  3. Select Controllers and choose a controller.
  4. Click on Unpair Controller to unmatch the controller.

Repeat the above procedure to unmatch the other controller.

Rematching the controllers is not a tack after you have done the above procedure. You will only need to start from the controllers’ Menu and then select the Option of Pairing a new device.

3. Polish The Battery Connectors Of The Controllers

Electric transmission from the batteries via the battery connectors is sometimes hindered when the metal connectors are coated by externalities/particles/debris. To control this and ensure that there is sufficient electric transmission, you will need to polish/clean the connectors, that is, the spring connector and the metal strip on the positive end.

Do not use any chemical or liquid to cleanse the connectors. Use a dry piece of cloth or cotton. Put back the batteries 3 minutes after cleaning the connectors and try using your controller.

4. Use New Batteries/Recharge Batteries

The above procedures revolve around the Controller batteries. If the controller is persistently faulty even after trying the above procedures, then it is time to purchase new AA batteries. Dispose of the other batteries safely. You may consider these amazing battery brands that we recommend: Energizer Max Lithium Batteries and Panasonic Eneloop Rechargeable batteries

The mentioned battery brands are some of the best in the market that you can consider using. I would recommend rechargeable batteries as you will not need to keep purchasing new batteries every time. If you purchase from other brands that we have not mentioned, make sure the batteries are AA.

Other Ways Of Fixing Your Faulty Controller

Most of the above processes are battery-oriented and you may try all of them but the controller is still not working. Here are some of the other ways of fixing the problem:

1. Reboot Your Oculus Quest 2 Headset

This is a very simple process that may work. This has worked for some users. Here is how to restart your headset:

  • The headset should be on, long-press the power button on the right side of the headset. Long press until the screen displays Power Off.
  • Choose Restart, the headset will power off then on again.

Alternatively:

  • Long press the power button for 12 seconds to manually turn off your headset.
  • Give it 1 minute and then repeatedly press the power button for 12 seconds until it powers on.

2. Restore To Default Your Quest 2 Headset

Restoring to default is factory resetting. This should come last. Try this if all the above procedures do not work. This should be the last option because all the settings are taken back to the initial stage, that is, default. All your information will be erased. This means you will be setting it up to your software fresh from the start. This is why you will need to back up some of the data you consider useful to you. Use an external device to store this data such as your PC. Note that once you decide to factory reset, you cannot go back.

You can factory reset your Oculus Quest 2 using either your phone or the headset.

Using the headset:

  • Power off the headset.
  • Press the volume down and power button at the same time until there is a boot screen on the headset.
  • Highlight Factory Reset using the volume buttons. Once you have highlighted it, press the power button.
  • Use the volume buttons again to highlight Yes and then press the Power button.

Using your phone:

  • Locate the Oculus App on your phone.
  • Click Devices (in the bottom menu).
  • Your headset should be connected to your phone, click on the headset connected to your phone.
  • Go to Advanced settings.
  • Click on Factory Reset and then Reset.
