Google Nest Connect has three functions; it first extends the range of the Google Nest secure alarm system to enable you to install the Google Nest Detect sensors far away, it also has a backup battery just in case the power goes out, and it also enables Nest products like the Google Nest x Yale lock to connect to the Internet.

Using Connect with the Nest Secure alarm system

By adding Connect to Nest secure provides an extra boost that is needed to get reliable coverage in large homes. This is important because even if you have detects installed at the other end of your home, they still communicate with Google Nest Guard.

How do I install Nest Connect?

If you already have some other Nest products in your home, you should make sure that they are near when you try to add the Nest Connect to the app. The Nest Connect will connect with them during the pairing, and they have to be in range.

  • Then select Add product icon. With a plus.
  • Scan the QR code found on the back of the Connect.
  • The app walks you through the process.
  • Plug the Connect into a wall outlet between the Nest products to help in extending the range.

If you have Nest x Yale Lock and the Nest Secure, you can use the same Connect in extending the range of the alarm system and allow the lock to connect to Wi-Fi. You may need to have more than one connect in some cases if the Lock and Guard are installed far away from each other.

Troubleshooting when the Nest × Yale Lock is offline

Since the lock gets its internet connection fro the Guard or Connect, you should first check the connecting products if they are offline.

To check if Nest Connect is offline, go to the Nest app home screen and go to settings > Nst Connects > then select your Connect > Check the connection. From here, you follow the onscreen instructions to see if it is offline.

To check if the Nest Guard is offline, look at the Nest app home screen and then see if the Guard says “Offline.”

How to Lock and Unlock the Nest × Yale Lock if the Battery is Drained

The Nest app will send you a notification when the battery of the lock is getting low, and then they will also send a second notification when the batteries are critically low. This is good because it gives you plenty of time to replace them before they are dead.

You may, at times, use a 9-volt battery to charge the lock temporarily so that you can enter the passcode on the keypad of the lock to lock or to unlock it.

  • First, you have to confirm the batteries are depleted completely;y. you have to press on the Yale logo on the lock keypad or hold your palm on the keypad. If the keypad does not light up, then you should go to the second step. If the keypad lights up, there are other issues that you should check for like the lock could be offline, so you cannot use the app to lock and unlock.
  • The second step is to hold the standard alkaline 9-volt battery, those square kinds, on the contacts at the bottom of your locks. When they are in contact, you will hear, “Press the Yale logo to begin. The batteries are very low. Replace the batteries now.”
  • If you do not hear the locks speaking, you should make sure that the battery is firmly touching on both of the contacts of the lock. You should also try to press on the Yale logo to wake it up if it does not automatically wake up.
  • The third step is to continue holding the battery on the contacts as you enter the passcode and press on the Check icon.

Can The Nest Yale Lock be Hacked?

YES! It is possible for the Nest x Yale lock to be hacked. This is because it can emit some vulnerabilities that may, in the end, screw up the safety of the door in some cases. It can also be accessed with pre-existing passcodes. The hackers could also access the Nest Lock through the Wi-Fi network.

How Secure is the Nest x Yale Lock?

The modern Nest x Yale is able to replace your existing lockbolt; this is because it comes in a layer that is secured out and oil rubbed polished brass. You should take a look at the manual of the lock before you install it.

It is good to have a look at the compatibility of the door before you buy them, although doors and locks are combinations that are evergreen. You will find that most of the wood, glass, and metal doors are fine with it.

Many people are in love with regular door locks. There is no possibility of hacking, and you don’t need to share the key with anyone like you share the passcode.

When you install the smart door locks, they are just as safe as the other regular door locks. However, they have some authentification features like the combination key code, fingerprint, and face lock that makes them safer than the regular keys.

Most of the problems start with programming. If the programming is not done correctly, or if some set the pattern of the door lock easily with multiple attempts, they can breach the code. Smart locks face vulnerabilities if they are programmed incorrectly.

Some plain text passwords are easy to hack. Many people use their last or first names as their security code, and that is where most problems begin.

Replay attacks are one way the hackers use. They access everything you try on the keypad as a delay with time. So they can steal the passcode or command the smart lock from responding to you.

The other method is device spoofing. This is a method of disguising a communication from an unknown source or a device as it is from a trusted source. This can be in the form of emails, IP addresses, phone calls. A command will envoke you to enter the lock code so as to unlock it.

Google suggests that you have two-factor authentification to make them secure and use a strong password also.

How to Protect Your Smart Lock From Being Hacked?

All of th smart locks that are available in the market right now can be hacked, as they have a similar algorithm. The encryption and passcode segmentation may be changed, but all of the top brands can be hacked too.

But I have a few things that you can do to avoid some of these security breaches. You should make sure that your locks use the minimum 128 bit AES encryption for all the communication. Having a two-factor authentification is one of the most secure ways you can follow, although it irritates at times.

You should use longer passcodes and deadly combinations. A smart lock should enable you to use a long passcode that has more than 16 characters. If you have a smart code that has shorter passcodes, it is exposed to the hackers. A brute force is a kind of attack where the hacker uses many combinations to hack the passcode.

You should also manually check the updates to get software and apps because most of them are not automatically updated. If you have a version of a software that is out of date, you are in trouble; it opens you up to a security breach.

ANSI Grade, The American National Standards Institute grade is based on a system to know the ability of hardware. There are some tests that locks have to perform before they are sold—this grades hep in rating the security that can hold 1 million opening and closing cycles. Grade 2 is an intermediate level of durability and resists 800k of opening and closing and can also withstand five strikes of 75 pounds of force.

Does Nest x Yale Lock Work With Google Voice?

YES! The Nest x Yale lock supports voice commands with Google Assistant if you have one of the Google Homes apps for your smartphones. You can use it to tell your lock to check the lock or the Nest app; you can also check if the door is locked properly or not. You can also command the Google Assistant to lock the door for you as well.

Most of the time, when you issue a command, Nest x Yale is not the receiver that gets it. You will be speaking to one of the assistants like Google Home, iPhone, Nest cam IQ indoor, and Nest Guard.

You cannot unlock the door using voice commands. For safety reasons, Nest and Google won’t support voice commands so as to prevent unauthorized people from unlocking the door.

When you are not close to your house, you can easily check if the door is locked or not.all you need t do is to ask Google Assistant whether the door is locked or not.
